The Balearic Islands are comprised of 4 main islands. Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and the lesser known Formentera. They are located in the western Mediterranean and at the closest point are just 85 km off Spain’s Costa Blanca and Valencian coast.
Mallorca is the largest in terms of population and size but is only 95km across at its widest point. It has a population of 875,000, the Capital is Palma and whilst Spanish is the national language, Mallorquin (a dialect of Catalan) is widely spoken.
Mallorca is probably most famous as a tourist destination and in 2013 had over 9million visitors.
The island’s mountain range; The “Serra de Tramuntana”, runs from South west to North East on what is usually termed as its Western coast. Its highest peak is Puig Major at 1445m.
Mallorca has many faces. One is with the Package & party tourist areas such as in Magaluf and Arenal. However, despite their fame they are in fact relatively small areas and rarely do their visitors venture out to discover the true beauty of Mallorca.
Then there is the exclusive and upmarket side:
Mallorca also boasts numerous opportunities for the sporting. Sailing, diving and all types of Water sports are very popular but probably Mallorca is most famous for its Tennis and Golf. Despite its size, amazingly Mallorca has 21 golf courses, 19 of which are 18 hole and many of them are Championship courses. Tennis on Mallorca has always has a good club reputation but is made more famous by local Rafael Nadal. Driving a car on Mallorca means you cannot help to notice the passion for Cycling and many of the world’s most famous road race teams visit the island for training.
The Undiscovered side of Mallorca is generally assumed to be just the interior. The beautiful and quaint Villages in the Mountains and the roads between them have some of the most incredible views and scenery found in Europe. These areas are truly idyllic and it is so surreal that this peace and tranquility can literally be just a few miles away from busy tourist areas and hectic pumping nightlife. However it is not just the interior that is “undiscovered” as there are many beautiful beaches and Coves and despite the 9 million visitors they can be relatively quiet even in the summer.
Traveling to Mallorca is simple as there are numerous direct flights from most European airports and there are a number of ferries between the islands and also direct to Barcelona, Valencia & Denia on the mainland.
Property in the Balearics has seen decreases in values from the highs of 2007 but not as drastic as seen on the mainland, and indeed prices have over the past 2 year have started to see gains. Property prices are generally higher than on the Mainland and they have tended to be that much more stable.
The beauty, accessibility, exclusiveness, beeches, superb climate, food & restaurants and quality property are some of reasons many of the worlds rich and famous such as Richard Branson, Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta Jones, Claudia Schiffer, Rafael Nadal, Michael Schumacher, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Annie Lennox and Boris Becker have all owned or do own property on Mallorca.
